From Formula 1 to Our Showroom
Mercedes-AMG® High Performance Powertrains is renowned for its Formula 1 expertise, and it has collaborated with Factorial Energy and the Mercedes-Benz Center of Competence for Battery Systems to create a new solid-state battery system. The groundbreaking collaboration has resulted in the first road-going car powered by a lithium-metal solid-state battery. The battery was placed into a modified Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan. Road testing began in February, following laboratory testing that started late in 2024.
What Advantages Do Solid-State Batteries Offer?
Solid-state batteries offer an enormous leap forward from traditional lithium-ion batteries. Advantages include:
- Higher Energy Density: Solid-state technology allows the use of new anodes, such as lithium-metal, leading to significantly higher energy densities.
- Improved Safety: Using a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one improves cell integrity and safety.
- Reduced Weight: Solid-state batteries reduce weight, improving performance and efficiency.
- Increased Range: The test vehicle with the solid-state battery is expected to have a range of 621 miles.
